About Zakaria, Issa and Trips to Surif

Trips to Surif functions as an information center in the village of Surif. The goal of the center is to create a more vibrant community in the village and attract tourists, to ignite the local economy. The enterprise offers trainings for both children and adults. For school children, the trainings focus on languages and other relevant elementary courses. For adults (both tourists and locals) the center offers workshops in embroidery, cooking classes, art classes and much more. To make it viable, these workshops are conducted in return of a small fee.

In addition to being a community gathering point, the center is planned to also feature a small shop, which sells crafts made by local women. Part of the profit generated by the shop will go towards maintaining the center, but a larger part will go to the women who create the crafts. Many of these women are housewives, who benefit greatly from the extra income. In addition to these social benefits, it is hoped that the center will reduce unemployment in the area.

At the moment, the center is run by volunteers and only functions on a limited scale, without any form of income. The founders’ vision is that it will expand greatly in the coming years, even exporting the concept to other villages. The reason for this is that the concept is unique in the area and engages the local population in an unpreceded way.

Zakaria Mufreh and Issa Abufara are both founders of Trips to Surif. Zakaria has completed his education in economic management, while Issa has a background in computer maintenance and vocational training. Both have been active in Action Aid’s community work for the past 3 months. They hope the SE training will provide them with new tools and ideas, which makes it more clear how they should run their enterprise.
