About Nour, Shafi, and Today’s Pottery & Ceramics

Today’s Pottery & Ceramics is a new Nablus-based enterprise, which builds upon traditional Palestinian heritage and ceramic handicraft. This family-run enterprise develops the craft further and uses ceramic techniques to build furniture rather than jars and souvenirs. Traditionally, the Palestinian ceramic industry has been reserved the southern West bank, but the founder of this new initiative hopes to expand the industry to the northern parts as well.

The social aspect resides in the enterprise’s focus on spreading the industry to new areas. In these areas, unemployed art graduates have few opportunities to find jobs. With this initiative, the founder hopes to be able to provide new job opportunities to them. Furthermore, the traditional ceramics industry solely employs male workers, but this enterprise is founded by females and seeks to employ workers of both genders.

In the SE training, the initiative is represented by Fida Shafi and Nour Bakir. Fida Shafi, originally from Jaffa, is the founder of the initiative, which she started working on in her home in Nablus. She has a doctorate in Philosophy and has previously worked in a women’s center in a refugee camp. Furthermore, she has been an environmental activism ambassador for Palestine in the Global Eco-Village Network, and active in the United Nations volunteer program. Fida Shafi hopes the SE training will provide her with the skills necessary to run a successful business.

Nour Bakir is Fida Shafi’s niece from Nablus. She has a background in financial studies and has been engaged in the initiative’s startup process since its conception. She hopes the SE training will help her gain knowledge about how to start up a business and continuously run an enterprise.
