When is the application deadline for SE Outreach Accelerator Stockholm 2016?

The deadline for the first application round is Monday October 26th 2015, 10:00 AM CET (Stockholm time). Applications received after this date will be not reviewed.

Selected applicants will be contacted by October 29th and asked to submit a second application. The deadline for the second application round is November 9th 2015.

Who is the SE Outreach Accelerator Stockholm 2016 for?

SE Outreach Accelerator is a program for:
• projects/enterprises founders
• change-makers
• social entrepreneurs
who are creating positive social and/or environmental impact in developing communities. It is a capacity-building program that is designed to equip the participants with entrepreneurial skills to enable them to scale up their impact and accelerate their growth, thereby creating a multiplier effect of the positive impact they are having.

What is the definition of social entrepreneurship?

The definition of social entrepreneurship is much debated and a plethora of opinions exist on the topic. SE Forum defines social entrepreneurship as an organization, venture or enterprise solving an environmental and/or societal issue using entrepreneurial methods. The aim for a social entrepreneur is to solve the identified problem by setting up a venture built upon financial sustainability beyond donations.

Who is a social entrepreneur?

SE Forum defines a social entrepreneur as an individual who identifies an environmental and/or societal issue or need, and uses entrepreneurial skills and principles to address the issue at hand. The difference between a conventional entrepreneur and a social entrepreneur is located in their different approaches utilized when measuring their results. Where conventional entrepreneurs are primarily concerned with their enterprises economic profitability, social entrepreneurs place equal weight on the financial sustainability and the positive environmental and/or societal impact of their venture. The financial sustainability thus, is what makes it possible to have a social impact in the long run and provides opportunities to scale up the social impact.

What does the SE Outreach Accelerator program look like?

The key program components of the SE Outreach Accelerator include: seminars, workshops, mentorship, peer-to-peer discussions as well as individual and group coaching sessions. Seminars and workshops will cover topics that include but are not limited to; business-model designs, business planning, pitching and presentations, partnership development, brand management and communication, financial management, funding strategies, leadership skills, team-building, and social-impact measuring.
We will also to provide post-program support to our participants to help them achieve their impact goals.

Where is the SE Outreach program based?

The SE Outreach program is run by Social Entrepreneurship Forum, which is a non-profit organization based in Stockholm, Sweden. The participants will spend three weeks in Stockholm during April 11-29, then travel back to their home countries to work on their businesses and then spend another three weeks in Stockholm during September 5-23 2016.

How much does it cost to attend the SE Outreach Accelerator Stockholm 2016?

SE Outreach Accelerator in Stockholm is a program that is provided free of charge. This means that there is NO cost of attendance, or application fee associated with the program.

Furthermore, we will cover some of the expenses associated with attendance which include:

  • Return flights, visa, insurance
  • Accommodation in Stockholm
  • Food allowance while in Stockholm
  • Internet
  • Travel card to use Stockholm public transportation

Will all my cost in Stockholm be covered then?

As you can see above, we cover the majority of the costs associated with attending the program in Stockholm.

However, Stockholm features one of the highest living expenses in the world, and our daily food allowance will not provide for restaurant meals everyday. It is highly recommended that participants prepare most meals themselves and particularly together with other participants to make the most of getting to know each other!

We cannot cover for expenses to buy personal belongings such as clothes or personal computers.

Do I have to be a Swedish citizen to apply to the SE Outreach Accelerator Stockholm 2016?

No, in fact we encourage people from outside of Sweden to apply to the SE Outreach Accelerator!

I am not a Swedish citizen. If I am selected to the SE Outreach Accelerator in Stockholm, I will require to obtain a visa to travel to Sweden. Will I get assistance from SE Forum?

Yes, if you are selected, SE Forum will assist you in providing all the relevant paperwork for you to apply for the visa to travel to Sweden and attend the program. We will also reimburse you for the visa cost.

However, you will be responsible for obtaining the visa and are usually required to apply in person.

Can I apply to the SE Outreach Accelerator in Stockholm if I am a Swedish citizen or if I live in Sweden?

Yes! Swedish citizens or Swedish residents with projects/enterprises benefiting developing communities are encouraged to apply.

Do I need to have a registered enterprise to apply to the SE Outreach Accelerator Stockholm 2016?

No, you do not need to have registered an enterprise prior to applying to the SE Outreach Accelerator. However, we seek social entrepreneurs who are serious about making an impact through innovative business solutions, and we therefore expect that your ambition is to register your enterprise in the near future.

To apply to the SE Outreach Accelerator in Stockholm, does the legal structure of the enterprise matter?

The legal structure of the enterprise is of less importance to us, and hence it does not matter if you (intend to) run a for-profit or non-for profit enterprise. The most important thing is that your enterprise has a vision and a long-term plan of how to become financially sustainable. For a definition of how we define financial sustainability, click here.

What do you mean by financial sustainability?

The fact that social entrepreneurship has a social focus does not mean that it excludes principles, objectives, and in some cases even profit generation found in conventional entrepreneurship.

Financial sustainability is defined as the ability for a project or enterprise to meet all its resource and financing obligations by maintaining a steady flow of sufficient funds. These funds can be generated through sales of products & services or user charges.

Market profit generation is a good financial reward for the entrepreneur, but also an assurance for the sustainability and longevity of the solution presented by the business model. Having a profit generating and financially sustainable social enterprise, independent of financial support from aid organizations, funds and donations, is also desirable if the enterprise is to expand and create a broader impact. Furthermore, the recipients of such financial support are often constrained in their ability to scale up due to restrictions imposed by the fund provider.

Do I need to be fluent in English to participate in the SE Outreach Accelerator in Stockholm?

We aim to support social entrepreneurs from all over the world and are convinced that one can make an impact in the world without speaking English. Thus, we do not require fluency in English, and encourage you to apply even though English may not be your first or second language. However, you will need to be able to read, write, speak and comprehend English at a sufficient level in order to get the most out of the program.

What is expected of the participants in the SE Outreach Accelerator programs?

Selected applicants are expected to:

  • Attend the program in its entirety
  • Commit to achieving financial sustainability of your project/enterprises after the program
  • Provide us with your business and social impact progress via online questionnaires 6, 12 and 24 months after the program to help us evaluate our impact. Sometimes, we will want to arrange a skype date to catch up with you and we hope you will be willing to make some time for us!
How many participants will be selected to the SE Outreach Accelerator 2016?

8 participants from 8 different projects/enterprises will be selected.

Can anybody from the team participate in the SE Outreach Accelerator Stockholm 2016?

It is important that the applicant is a founder or a co-founder of the project/enterprise who have executive power. This is because the Accelerator aims to accelerate the idea and the enterprise and executive decisions will therefore need to be made during the course of the Accelerator programs.

Does the SE Outreach Accelerator guarantee funding for its participating projects/enterprises?

We do NOT provide direct funding to the social enterprises participating in the Accelerator program.

However, the Accelerator will give you insight into available funding strategies, and how to develop partnerships and investor relations.

Furthermore, we will connect you with incubators and give recommendations on fellowship programs that may be able to provide you with continuous support after the Accelerator.

If accepted to the SE Outreach Accelerator Stockholm 2016, am I required to work full-time on the program?

You will be required to work full-time on your projects/enterprises during the extent of the program and attend all the scheduled program activities. The scheduled program activities will mostly take place during the day, and will vary in the number of hours. Some days, scheduled activities will take place in the evening or weekends.

How will I run my project/enterprise during the SE Outreach Accelerator program?

One benefit of the Accelerator is that it allows you to take a time out from the day-to-day running of your project/enterprise to reflect, evaluate and make the strategic decisions in order to accelerate the business growth and scale of your positive impact. You will be encouraged to step back from the day-to-day work in order to benefit fully from the program and inform all the relevant parties of your time-off. However, we know you may have to deal with important emails and business decisions and your program schedule will build in the time for you to do so. You will also benefit from the co-working environment where you have others to talk through your problems and issues with.

From where will I work if I am accepted to the SE Outreach Accelerator program in Stockholm?

If successfully selected to the SE Outreach Accelerator, you will be provided with office space in Stockholm for the duration of the program, where you will be stationed together with the other participants.

What type of accommodation is provided for the participants of the SE Outreach Accelerator Stockholm 2016?

Accommodation in Stockholm will be provided in shared hostel/hotel-like apartments, at a commuting distance from the office where the program activities will take place.

How is the SE Outreach Accelerator funded?

The SE Outreach Accelerator is primarily funded by the Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA), which is a Swedish governmental agency working with development.
However, this funding does not cover everything and to make the Accelerator as great as possible, we also have to generate revenue through our other activities and we are continuously looking for co-funders to the program.

Is SE Outreach looking for strategic partners?

Yes, SE Outreach is on the lookout for funders and strategic partners.

We are looking to expand the SE Outreach program in both scale and scope.
